Episode 20 - Jason Goldberg

I have a pretty good track record for getting rappers to drop some rhymes on this show--in Episodes 4 and 5 Darryl McDaniels busted out several times--he's DMC from RunDMC-- and in this episode, I put JG on the spot live and he steps up and delivers! You don't want to miss it!

This interview is special to me because Jason and I have a bunch of history together! The two of us spent a remarkable year working privately with the late public speaking legend, Dr. Sean Stephenson, and we share several Sean stories during the episode.

JG is coach of the highest order, who is truly committed to helping people and organizations to transition from helpless, exhausted, overwhelmed, and overcommitted prisoners, to creative, conscious, and courageous self-leaders.

He's a phenomenal speaker and has shared the stage with many big names you know.

But most importantly, he's a great guy with a huge heart, and I'm excited to introduce you to him!

She’s also the Founder and CEO of Hint, Inc., and the creator of Hint water… I am literally drinking some right now!

She was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year Northern California and one of InStyle’s Badass 50 in 2019 Previously, she was VP of Shopping Partnerships at America Online and she hosts her podcast The Kara Goldin Show.

During our conversation, Kara shares her incredible journey as an Accidental Entrepreneur which began with her simple desire to give up sugary sodas and discover a way to enjoy drinking more water.

Which led her to develop the un-sweetened, natural-fruit flavored water—hint—which now sits as a healthy option on the shelves of grocery stores everywhere.

The book portrays her successful, but arduous quest to create a healthy beverage inside an industry where experts told her she had no chance of succeeding.

It very vulnerably chronicles her gritty struggle to build a brand and create an entirely new beverage niche.

“Undaunted” is unDoubtedly the right title for this book.

But it’s not just about building a business. She talks quite candidly about how she considered her family every step of the way, and involved them wherever possible.

The book is part autobiography, part business memoir, and part inspiration by remarkable example!

Pssst… Want to hear the international award-winning way I proposed to my former wife in a former life? (It’s really good story, and it’s just one of the fun stories in this week’s episode of The Jim House Show!

In this episode I’m going to introduce you to John Ruhlin, who is the author of “Giftology: The Art and Science of Using Gifts to Cut Through the Noise, Increase Referrals, and Strengthen Retention”

I’ve actually read this book twice because it’s such a stand-alone voice in the world of business and entrepreneurship

I’m a romantic at heart and his concept of Surprise and Delight resonates deeply with me.

Like I hinted at above, I’ll share with you the story of my marriage proposal from a former life that took runner-up in an international contest hosted by release of the movie Father of the Bride with Steve Martin.

I liken Giftology to romance… It’s the thoughtful cultivation and nourishing of important relationships – – both in your business and your personal life.

He starts the show with a story that I’ve heard him tell probably six times now, and it STILL fascinates me, I’m sure it will have a similar effect on you!

He tells us why he decided to write the book that made him a thought leader in his space, and he shares the massive benefits—financial and otherwise—that have come this way because of the book.

And we discuss how the nourishing relationships should be considered an investment, not an expense,… and how it can be done on any budget

Episode 16 - Nir Eyal

Has this ever happened to you?

“A ping on your phone takes you out of a conversation with a friend. At the office, a colleague interrupts your work on a project. At home, screens intrude on time with your partner. Your goals don’t get done and it feels like someone (or something) is constantly pulling you away from what you really want to do. Why does it seem we’re no longer in control of our attention or our lives?”

I invite you to listen in to my conversation with Nir Eyal, the best-selling author of Hooked: How to Build Habit, Forming Products (found on desks all over Google and Apple), and Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life.

Indistractable was named one of the best business and leadership books of the year by Amazon, and one of the best personal development books of the year by Audible. Globe and Mail called it the best business book of 2019.

The book is a fascinating and purposeful walk through his journey to becoming aware of the causes of his distraction, and his discovery of the techniques, strategies, and technologies that helped him manage distraction in his own life to accomplish the things he really cares about.

Nir’s writings have also been featured in The New York Times, The Harvard Business Review, Time Magazine, and Psychology Today, and The M.I.T. Technology Review called him, “The Prophet of Habit-Forming Technology.”

After he successfully sold two companies Nir found himself asking the question,

“If money was no object, what would I do now?”

Which led him to his love of writing.

And yet, even as a professional writer, Nir admits he had a personal struggle with distraction. He shares the story of the precise moment during some daddy-daughter time when he realized just how distracted he really was.

Nir confesses that he really wrote this book for himself. “I didn't write the book because I knew the techniques…” He says, “I wrote the book because I was looking for the techniques.” That led him on a relentless journey to discover why, even when doing his most important work, he was so frequently distracted.

One of my favorite parts of the book, and we talk about this in the interview, is the role of identity in dealing with distraction.

And he shares that while Indistractable is obviously not a real word, he wanted it to sound similar to indestructable.

The book is a fascinating and purposeful walk through his journey to becoming aware of the causes of his distraction, and his discovery of the techniques, strategies, and technologies that helped him manage distraction in his own life to accomplish the things he really cares about.

The most obvious application of being Indistractable would be in our work lives, but being Indistractable will help us accomplish and achieve the things that matter most. He talks about how being Indistractible can profoundly help you in your personal relationships and in raising your own children.

Thanks for joining me for this VERY interesting conversation… Buckle up and pay attention!

Go buy the book! You can find Nir on his very popular blog NirAndFar.com where he has loads ofof free and valuable resources.

What do the FBI, the CIA, the ATF, Chris Rock, Rachel Ray, powerful Bellybuttons, The Today Show, and the executive producer of Saturday Night Live have in common?

Well, they ALL make an appearance in this week’s episode with the amazing Janine Driver!

We start off with that fateful night, years ago in her NY stand-up comedy career that set her on a path to write her NYT bestseller “You Say More Than You Think: A 7-Day Plan for Using the New Body Language to Get What You Want”

I have to tell you, her journey to getting an impressive book deal is truly unlike any I’ve ever heard of before.

I don’t say this often, but this book could change your life, or perhaps even save it.

Janine presents a new approach to body language which shows you how to become aware of the secret messages that your body is constantly betraying to those around you.

And then she shows you how you can leverage your own body language to protect yourself, your family, your friends, and your finances.

Back before there were cell phones and GPS, she was an ATF investigator who would travel alone and without a gun to the lairs of alleged arms traffickers

She relied solely on her command of body language to keep herself safe and obtain the information she needed to take bad guys off the street.

She shares some powerful techniques you can implement today to help you in your dating life or your career.

And we both share how our belly buttons played an important role in keeping people safe… you’re going to have to listen in to find out how.

Janine shares her own personal story quite vulnerably, and it obvious how committed she is to help others avoid some of the mistakes that she’s made in her own life.

There’s lots of laughter, some goosebumps, and maybe even some tears.

Episode 11: Charlie Engle

Charlie Engle is the author of, “Running Man: A Memoir of Ultra Endurance”

It’s a remarkable book filled with lots of conflict, adventure and intrigue… and inside he shares his journey both vulnerably and generously.

Both the book and his journey start in a dark world of crack-cocaine addiction, but don’t worry, by page 70 he’s in recovery

and has discovered that he loves to push his physical and mental limits far beyond what normal human beings would consider possible— and sane.

His favorite race was the Badwater Ultramarathon—considered to be the world’s toughest race—which starts below sea level in the furnace of Death valley where race temperatures can reach 130 degrees. The grueling race continues for 135 miles up to Whitney portal at 8300 feet on the base of Mt Whitney.

By all accounts it’s a brutal race… but that wasn’t extreme enough for him

So, he decided to run across an entire desert.

And not just any desert—the Sahara desert.

And why not become the first human to run all the way across the Sahara AND the whole continent of Africa, as well?!

It was a journey that consisted of running two marathons every day for 111 consecutive days, without taking a single day off.

And the ground temperatures for half of those days were 140 to 150 degrees. About 4600 miles in all.

This wasn’t a hundred-mile run. This wasn’t a TWO hundred-mile run. This was a Four Thousand Six Hundred mile run!

He recruited an Academy award-winning director, and Matt Damon who produced a movie about their epic feat. He and Matt also created a nonprofit that has raised millions to help provide clean water in Africa.

It’s interesting to note, that while his crazy accomplishments ( running the Sahara) were matched by few others on the planet, Charlie shares that it wasn’t until he was unjustly sentenced to prison for 16 months that his story finally became “Deal-worthy” in the eyes of the traditional publishing world… and ultimately resulted in an auction with 5 of the big houses.

His book was published over 3 years ago, and he still gets half a dozen emails every day from people around the world who have been touched by his story and his book. That’s the kind of impact that’s possible when you write a good book.

Charlie is a humble guy with a kind heart, who just happens to be a Super Beast on the trail.

He shares that he always breaks down during his long races—that there’s always massive suffering he has to work through.

So listen in and learn why he says that during races—and during our lives—it’s Not about what happens to us, it's about what WE Choose To Do about it.

Episode 10 - Lisa Cini

On this week’s show we tread into deep waters, and talk about a topic that doesn’t find its way into many conversations.

My guest is the remarkable Lisa Cini who is one of the worlds foremost experts in senior-living design,

and how to make all types of living spaces more friendly and manageable for those who have Alzheimer’s and dementia.

In her book HIVE: The Simple Guide to Multigenerational Living, she shares the rare and poignant experience she had when her family VERY intentionally created a home and life where 4 generations lived AND thrived together…under the same roof; from her own kids, to her 93 year old grandmother who had Alzheimers.

In this episode, we just dip or toes into the water with several of the issues surrounding Alzheimer’s, but this is very personal for me because both of my parents have Alzheimer’s, and I’ll share a little bit about that with you.

Quite frankly, every time I bring it up with a friend or colleague, I find that almost everyone has been touched by Alzheimer’s in some way in their own life—either directly or indirectly—and yet, no one talks about it.

My intention is just to make it easier for people to have this conversation. And perhaps give them a springboard to talk about Alzheimer’s more openly with their own family members or friends.

Lisa is in high-demand—all around the world—to speak about this and related topics. You can see her all the time on news shows, on loads of podcasts, and keynoting on big stages.

In fact, she and I actually met while speaking together on a panel, up on stage, at an entrepreneur’s conference,

and we immediately realized that our missions and values were very aligned.

Lisa shares a ton of wisdom, and at the end of the episode, she gives us 20 VERY practical tips you can implement right NOW—or in the future—to help anyone who has a family member—or a friend—who is suffering from this disease.

I’m honored to share this conversation with you, and I’m super happy to introduce you to my good friend!

Episode 9 - Ed Rush

The Rare Few, who have spent a significant amount of time in the cockpit of an F-18 fighter jet know the value of strategy and the power of focus when flying nearly twice the speed of sound.

After 2 combat tours to Iraq, decorated Marine fighter pilot Ed Rush—one of the country's leading instructors in aerial-dogfight fighting, left full-time active duty to speak, write, and share a focused message that will change the world.

Ed’s clients range from Entrepreneurs to Multi-million-dollar multi-national organizations and include CEOs, founders, political leaders, sports teams, universities, and Hollywood stars.

However, Ed is quick to point out, that he achieved ALL of that in spite of failing kindergarten.

As you will hear in this interview, Ed's family is very important to him, and that’s why he initially made him show up on my radar.

He shares a couple of pretty crazy flying stories, and he even gives Us a brief tutorial for how to fly an F-18… pretty cool!

So why would one of the top F-18 pilots in the world, turn IN his wings and walk away at the top of his game—away from something that he loved doing?

Well, Ed answers that question during our conversation, and here’s a little hint... books are part of the answer.

All of my previous guests have been successfully published by traditional publishing houses, but that’s not the right path for everyone, for very few, in fact.

So, I wanted you to hear why someone who had the option to be published by the big houses,

chose instead, to self-publish on his own.

I helped Ed create his wildly successful book the 21 Day Miracle, and he’ll lift the hood to reveal part of that remarkable book journey.

He has over 160, 000 followers on Facebook, 80,000 on Instagram, and north of 10,000 on LinkedIn.

Go buy the 21 Day Miracle at EdRushBook.com which is a free membership site we created along with the book, and it’s got a ton of value inside.

Ed’s super bright, he’s really funny (please don’t tell him I said that) and, he’s here on the planet to make a difference!

I usually say Buckle Up before we start the interview, but today I’m going to say…

Buckle yourself into the harness, and get ready for a Catapult launch off of the carrier!

Episode 8 - Jim’s Journey from Principal to Podcaster

In today’s episode, I’m going to share a bit of the journey that led me from being Principal of several schools in tough-gang neighborhoods to a best-selling author, and then into the world of high-level book coaching, and most recently, to the host of this podcast, The Jim House Show.

The Show is a beautiful collision of significant books, interesting authors, and great conversations. And I get to be right in the middle of it all – with you!

I’ve always been wildly curious about how an author brought their book to life.

Where did the book idea come from? What was their process for planning the book and what did their writing process look like?

And it’s SO much fun to to sit down and ask them personally— to discover how the original seed of an idea became a book worth reading.

We get a rare glimpse into their creative process and we hear it straight from the source

But the conversation doesn’t end there, because the life of a book is just beginning when the author types The End.

And I love hearing the authors talk about the impact that writing the book had on them—and on their readers,

Every author I’ve interviewed has shared amazing things about how writing the book changed them.

And how about you?

Have you ever wanted to write your own good book?

If so, I'm sure you'll find these conversations, both revealing and invaluable!

Thanks for listening!

Much love,

Episode 7 - Colin O’Brady

On Dec 26th, 2018 I wrote the following entry on my Facebook page (it’s still there):

“As I prep for 2019, I am inspired AND challenged by this piece of history that JUST happened a FEW HOURS AGO!

I don’t know Colin O'Brady yet, but many of my friends do, and they speak of how he squeezes every drop out of life.”

The piece of history I was referring to was the fact the Colin had just become the FIRST human, in the history of planet Earth, to cross Antarctica Alone,

Now, obviously, there's a reason no one else had ever accomplished this colossal feat...it’s because most considered it to be Impossible.

So impossible, in fact, that many polar explorers had tried and failed, and even lost their lives in pursuit of being the First.

I'm absolutely thrilled that Colin O'Brady is my guest on the Show today!

Colin's amazing book is called: The Impossible First: From Fire to Ice -- Crossing Antarctica Alone

In this New York Times Bestseller he shares that he overcame severe burn injuries (That’s the FIRE) and how—despite being told by doctors that he would never walk normally again—

he defied the odds to become a Triathlete on Team USA, and the holder 10 World Records including his crossing of Antarctica. (That’s the ICE)

At the beginning of the interview, he shares a story of Frozen Tears —

which is an image that captures both the unforgiving harshness of the external environment,

and the internal doubts, fears, and memories that populated his thoughts throughout his journey

I love Great Tales of adventure, but I wondered how 54 days of pulling a 350-pound sled across flat and featureless ice would translate into a book.

We take a deep dive into how he turned this sub-zero trek into a compelling book— a book WORTH reading.

We explore How this book differs from most of the books in the Adventure genre, and why that was an important goal for him during the writing.

Experiencing a great adventure is one thing

But turning that adventure into a good book is quite another

So we talk about how all of the experiences and thoughts from his epic quest eventually become THIS particular book.

Socrates once said that the Unreflected life is not worth living… and I know how valuable reflection has been to me in my own life. I used to go to monasteries for three or four days of silent prayer and reflection. And I found that 3-4 days was a really really long time to be alone with my thoughts!

But 54 days…

54 days of solitude and reflection… that’s CRAZY!

Colin talks about how cathartic it was to write the book

And he shares several behind-the-scenes stories—including how beating Captain Rudd by two days serendipitously helped him shape the book.

I think it’s pretty dang cool that the ultimate lesson Colin gleaned

as a result of his undaunted courage and relentless reflection… was INFINITE LOVE

Go buy the book—after you finish listening to our conversation, of course!

Say hi to Colin on IG…. @ColinOBrady

And all of his public speaking and non-profit work is on his website ColinOBrady.com

Second, he wanted to write it as a legacy book for his future grandkids, that would capture the wild 9-year journey.
